Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc.
In 2001, Rock Bottom Restaurants
hired Tesser, with Michael
Gonzales as Creative Director, to redesign their corporate
website as well as websites for their five restaurant brands.
Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, Walnut Brewery, ChopHouse & Brewery,
Old Chicago, and SingSing all have distinct flavors and attitudes,
but they also share a common theme… “Beer, Food,
and Fun!” Rock Bottom Restaurants Inc. needed Michael
to innovatively combine the central atmosphere of its diverse
restaurant identities as well as display the “feel” of
each of the five elements.
Rock Bottom Restaurants desired to keep their costs down by creatively integrating
the websites of all five restaurants (as well as the corporate one). To do this
they needed to have the same back-end technology and similar design templates
for each site. In addition, they needed to be able to make simple maintenance
changes to the site with their own internal design team, which would keep costs
down over the long run. Rock Bottom Restaurants had also undergone changes and
had a new marketing look and feel, which they wanted to take and deliver to an
online audience.
Michael conducted extensive research into each of the five restaurant brands.
While “Beer, Food, and Fun” is a convincing corporate theme, he had
to bring together the various approaches of each restaurant as well in order
to keep the theme contiguous throughout all the sites. Michael took the
current marketing design of Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. and translated it to
the web. In addition, he created simple templates and guidelines for the in-house
design team to use for website maintenance. Due to his creative understanding
of the needs of Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc., he nailed the design of each site
with the very first attempt.
Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. was extremely pleased with its new websites. Now
they could successfully exhibit ChopHouse & Brewery’s 1940’s “casual
elegance” and music, as well as Old Chicago’s “eat, drink,
be yourself” attitude, and SingSing Dueling Pianos’ “come thirsty,
be loud, stay late” motto without diverting from its central corporate
theme.
